IBM betrat zwar 1981 mit dem original IBM-PC und PC-XT den allgemeinen PC-Markt, es war jedoch erst der Nachfolger, der PC-AT, der bis heute den weltweiten Standard bestimmen sollte. Wobei die „Vereinheitlichung“ in den USA schneller lief als in Europa oder Japan wie ein Zitat aus der Info World von 1984 zeigt:
